Walter TV is Canada’s self-proclaimed “best dance group” they tell their fans in order to get a few laughs while rocking out with their innovative surf-rock sound. The trio, Pierce McGarry (vocals/guitar), Joe McMurray (bass) and Simon Ankenman (drums) struck a chord with the L.A. Crowd at The Bootleg Theater with rambunctious fun and entertain stage antics. Their music explores distorted melodies echoing on the wavy haze of Mac Demarco or early Flaming Lips. Mac Demarco was also part of Walter TV at one point. Frontman McGarry jokes during his banter making his crowds feeling at ease during their acid trip on any given smoke-filled stage.

They began with the surf-reggae blended track “Graceland” and the awkward mix of drowning melodies that melted with the room. The jokesters had the crowd in stitches at their expense. “I see a lot of millennials in the crowd,” McGarry commented. “The most famous quote from Minecraft, ‘Get the fuck out of my room, mom!’ It wasn’t clear if the crowd’s uneasy reaction towards the Minecraft players in the room said it all.

They coerced drummer Ankenman to sing the intro to Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” The band joined and took this classic track into an inert state of being. Their cover of The Stone Roses’ “I Want To Be Adored” became an instant classic on this night. Their recent release, Carpe Diem, is out now with a tour hitting the east coast and in London and Rotterdam this December. Be on the lookout. In 2015, the talent for creating a prolific output of exceptional music is almost a curse. Press people will tell you that there’s a bottleneck of too many artists covered by too few media outlets who always want to talk about something new. Managers will tell you that there’s too much money to be made on the road, so the album cycle goes on and on to support that. Artists may even feel pressured by reviewers and themselves to go into a deep stasis, only to emerge again when they've reinvented themselves into a newly-revamped and retooled model, as opposed to just capturing time in a bottle and offering more to their catalog. At times, even fans have adopted this rule as well and are almost shocked when their favorite artist is able to release an LP already after two and a half or three years of waiting (let’s call this the MBV-effect).Lucky for us, Mac DeMarco is old school in his approach: when Mac wants to make a record and he has the songs ready, he makes it.

Like the days of Steely Dan, Harry Nilsson or Prince releasing a classic every year (or less) comes Mac DeMarco’s Another One,a Mini-LP announced almost one year to the date of the meteorically successful Salad Days. The album was conceived and recorded entirely by Mac in a short period of time between a relentless tour schedule. At his new place in Far Rockaway, Queens —a neighborhood as east as you can possibly be before hitting Long Island —you can live in relative isolation despite technically still being in New York City.

This left Mac with nothing more to do with his down time than to make music. Another One is an eight track release of brand new songs, freshly written for this release and each of which expand the arsenal of Mac’s already impressive catalog. Centered around a pump-organ riff and lilting vocal melody that is somehow both haunting and warm, “A Heart Like Hers” is a track that shows the maturity of Mac’s progression as songwriter. It’s a little bit more refined, a little bit more sophisticated, but nonetheless still retains the guts and soul of any classic Mac track. Opener “The Way You’d Love Her” has a playful swing to the chords and a guitar solo that wouldn't be out of place on a mid-period ‘Dead’LP, Mac’s new favored listening past-time.The overall feeling of the LP is lost love, or perhaps love never found, a topic that the world never tires of and one Mac can move through without it being a dour and somber experience.Title track“Another One” and stand out “Without Me” exhibit this bittersweet sensibility in lyrical and musical context, both melancholic and romantic, blurring the line between happy or sad nostalgia.

It is quite evident that there must be something in the water of Edmonton, Canada that is gifting its songwriters with the ability to write sweet and snug pop melodies. After putting in time with fellow Edmontonian, Mac DeMarco in Makeout Videotape, Alex packed away his drums to perfect his songwriting. Moving back to his mother's house he was able to write and record his first solo efforts in 2013. Alex Calder's sophomore release with Captured Tracks is as familiar as it is foreign— bringing together both infectious melody, and adventive texture to create tidy acid-induced dream sequences of slacker-pop. Although drawing from a similar arsenal of influences, Strange Dreams takes a confident step forward from Calder's previous release, Time EP.

Strange Dreams brings the focus and ambition of Alex's songwriting to all aspects of his music, delivering an incredibly personal and intimate album that feels mature while maintaining the youthful humor that has become his trademark. Tight rhythms tie down whirling guitars, sparkling textures bounce off of timeless melodies, and ambition beyond humble means are realized in Alex Calder's latest album.

Ghostly vibes effortlessly find their way into songs that possess a certain sense of urgency both lyrically and sonically. It is most certain that Alex Calder is well on his way to amassing a catalog that will be coveted by record collectors, and casual listeners alike. Hailing from Vancouver, Walter TV was originally composed of Joseph McMurray, Pierce McGarry, and Simon Ankenman. In 2011, after a recording session with Karl Blau in Anacortes, WA, the trio dispersed.

McMurray and McGarry moved to Montreal, while Ankenman went his separate way to pursue an 'outdoors-inspired' lifestyle. In Montreal, McGarry and McCurray moved into an apartment with Mac DeMarco and a rotating cast of friends. It was there, in their small apartment, that they recorded their cult breakthrough album, Appetite. Upon his signing to Captured Tracks, DeMarco recruited McGarry and McMurrary for his touring band and Walter TV was put on hold. However, despite their shift in priorities, the duo continued to develop the music of Walter TV in any spare time they had. The creative process of Walter TV is free form and organic, with each member's input equally valuable as the others. The result of this artistic autonomy is a unique sound built upon frenetic percussion, warbling vocals, abstract guitar, and a resonant bass line.

Appetite will be re-released August 26th on Sinderlyn, fully remastered and featuring NUMBER new tracks, thus re-introducing Walter TV into the world and serving as a precursor of what's to come in 2015.
